"Too Young to Marry, I Will Marry When I Want " is now your active project.

“An educated Malawian girl has high earning potential, enjoys good health, she is less likely to marry as a teenager, has fewer children, less likely to be a victim of gender based violence, more likely to educate her children and be productive to the community and the country at large.”

Although for a short period of time, the minimum age of marriage of Malawian girls was high on the political and the media agenda, no concerted effort has been made to gather the opinions, feelings and desires of girls themselves. It is important to bring to the spotlights the ideas and opinions of girls themselves in order to lobby for the raising of the minimum age of marriage again. Girls as a marginalized group need to be consulted properly on issues and legislative that affects their live.

The project aims at;

  • Encouraging girls to think and communicate about their views on their future and marriage.
  • Bringing to the attention of the general public as well as politicians and decision makers the opinions and views of girls themselves.
  • Generating attention for the “world Malawian girls are living in”, their dreams, ideas and plans for the future as well as their opinions on marriage and the minimum age of marriage.

Participants: adolescent girls participate in writing contest to bring up the issues affecting them.

Targets: speaker and members of parliament, key government officials, donor community and development partners.
