Nkhanza TOTO

Nkhaza TOTO Project

A women and girls’ movement against GBV in Malawi. Implementing interventions with the aim of addressing among others, ending Gender Based Violence (GBV), improving access to justice, and economic empowerment of girls and women.

Problem Statement

Malawi has been registering persistent and widespread discrimination against women and girls, with escalating cases of sexual gender-based violence that are a result of the prevailing negative social norms. Some of the issues promoting gender inequalities among women and girls include; poor policies and laws that are under resourced, weak coordination and inadequate capacity of stakeholders and lack of economic empowerment opportunities. Cultural beliefs and negative social norms have constrained girls’ and women’s ability to mobilize themselves for collective action in eliminating issues promoting inequalities. Increasing women’s and girls’ agency will improve organizing, voicing of women and girls’ and collection action to challenge and disrupt patriarchy and harmful gender norms.

Outcomes

  • Women and girl leaders demostrate increased knowledge and skills on women’s rights and movement building to fight against GBV.
  • Girls and women are assertive and confident. They collectively raise their voices, mobilize for collective action and stand up against gender inequalities, gender-based violence and challenge patriarchy.
  • Women and girls are confidently voicing out or contributing their views during decision making meetings. Girls and young women are holding various positions of power in their community
